ENERGY TIPS

In serving our community, we prioritize safety and quality in all we do. Providing our customers with energy tips of how they can be more cost-effective and safe in their homes is important to us.

WARM WEATHER TIPS

  • Use the grill, microwave or stove top instead of the oven if possible to avoid heating up the house
  • Keep the air vents clean for the best possible ventilation.
  • Use your thermostat to set the daytime temperature to 75-78°F when you’re at home. If you’re away for long periods set it to 85°F.
  • Laundry, dishwasher use and cooking should wait until night time to avoid making the house warmer.
  • Ceiling fans can cool the home to reduce the use of the air conditioner
  • Minimize the use of bathroom and kitchen vent fans so that cool air doesn’t escape
  • Air dry clothes outside instead of using the dryer.
  • Keep lights off if possible and use natural light to brighten the home
  • Make sure the area outside of your air conditioner is clear of debris.
  • Keep windows open to let cool air in during morning and night hours.
  • Replace the air filter on your air conditioner if dirty so that air flow isn’t restricted.
  • Check windows for drafts and make the necessary repairs so that cool air isn’t escaping.
  • Have your air conditioner checked for leaks to make sure it’s running efficiently.
  • Make sure your garage door isn’t allowing cool air to escape and letting warm air in by checking the gap between the bottom of the door and the threshold.
  • To protect your windows from the heat consider using awnings to block sunlight

COLD WEATHER TIPS

  • If you have a fireplace in use, turn the heater down
  • To prevent warm air from leaving the home close curtains and blinds.
  • Furnace temperature can be set at 68°F or lower.
  • While away from home set the thermostat to 56°F. This helps to reduce your heating bill.
  • Check windows for drafts and make the necessary repairs so that warm air isn’t escaping.
  • Have a contractor check your central heating and cooling duct system for leaks.
  • Make sure your garage door isn’t allowing warm air to escape by checking the gap between the bottom of the door and the threshold.

EVERYDAY TIPS

  • Shorter showers help reduce water heating costs. Set a 5-10 minute timer on your phone and suggest the same for other family members.
  • Unplug appliances not in use.
  • Check ice build up in your freezer on a regular basis and defrost if necessary
  • When washing clothes use cold water.
  • Clean dryer lint trap before each load.
  • Turn off water while brushing teeth, shaving or doing dishes.
  • Self-clean the oven right after use.
  • Keep oven closed while cooking so that you don’t lose heat during operation.
  • When operating dishwasher, make sure it’s fully loaded to save energy. Let dishes dry without using the dry cycle.
  • Install energy-saving showerheads, faucets, or flow restrictors.
