- Use the grill, microwave or stove top instead of the oven if possible to avoid heating up the house
- Keep the air vents clean for the best possible ventilation.
- Use your thermostat to set the daytime temperature to 75-78°F when you’re at home. If you’re away for long periods set it to 85°F.
- Laundry, dishwasher use and cooking should wait until night time to avoid making the house warmer.
- Ceiling fans can cool the home to reduce the use of the air conditioner
- Minimize the use of bathroom and kitchen vent fans so that cool air doesn’t escape
- Air dry clothes outside instead of using the dryer.
- Keep lights off if possible and use natural light to brighten the home
- Make sure the area outside of your air conditioner is clear of debris.
- Keep windows open to let cool air in during morning and night hours.
- Replace the air filter on your air conditioner if dirty so that air flow isn’t restricted.
- Check windows for drafts and make the necessary repairs so that cool air isn’t escaping.
- Have your air conditioner checked for leaks to make sure it’s running efficiently.
- Make sure your garage door isn’t allowing cool air to escape and letting warm air in by checking the gap between the bottom of the door and the threshold.
- To protect your windows from the heat consider using awnings to block sunlight
COLD WEATHER TIPS
